Laurie Carswell
Laurie Carswell is an Austin-based paper artist whose work explores light, color, and form through a meticulously layered, hand-cut paper process. Raised in a family deeply immersed in the arts, Carswell knew early on that she would pursue a creative life. She earned a degree in Theatre Design from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later became a certified art and theatre educator in Texas, where years of teaching high school art helped refine her technical skill and experimentation across materials.
In 2017, Carswell left the classroom to focus on her studio practice full time, discovering paper as the medium that most clearly expressed how she sees the world—each shift in light and color rendered as an individual shape. Today, her work spans Renaissance-inspired floral still lifes, portraits, waterscapes, landscapes, and large-scale abstractions. Carswell also teaches her distinctive paper art method at the Contemporary Austin Art School at Laguna Gloria and throughout the Austin area. She is currently working from her Austin studio on a Swimmer series inspired by the restorative qualities of water and the iconic Barton Springs Pool.
