La Vie Privée

Room No. 8

Behind the doors of La Vie Privée, the outside world can wait. Inspired by the private rooms of a storied French apartment, the everyday act of getting dressed is transformed into something far more sumptuous. Part dressing room, part salon, it is a place to linger, dress, lounge, daydream and allow time to slow down. At the heart of La Vie Privée is a collector of art, vintage finds and objects with stories, guided by her love of color, pattern and a little drama.

The room’s existing parquet floors, Juliet balcony and traditional millwork provide a classical backdrop for a daring mix of color and pattern. Benjamin Moore’s Dark Basalt, lacquered across the trim, walls and ceiling, frames the room in a deep aubergine glow, while a moody palette of midnight, malachite, coral, rust, burgundy, copper and gold moves throughout the furnishings and textiles. Refined architectural lighting hardware by Corston USA brings another layer of detail to the room’s character. Draped fabric adds drama to the ceiling and creates a sense of intimacy. Across the walls, an exquisite hand-painted Gracie wallcovering unfolds in flowering branches and birds, surrounding her with the beauty and movement of the natural world.

Vintage furnishings, sumptuous textiles and contemporary art give the room the feeling of an interior assembled over time. Velvets, pleating, passementerie and tassels build layers of texture, while custom upholstery and drapery by Plush Fabric Home Interiors and window treatments from The Shade Store add softness and movement. Beside the fireplace, she can settle into a custom upholstered chaise, with a custom Tai Ping carpet and Kyle Bunting hide continuing the play of pattern underfoot. A vintage bar cart found at Antique Swan stands ready for a pre-dinner cocktail. Stone by Strike Fireplace frames the hearth, while a fireplace screen and chandelier by Claire Crowe Collection catch the low light like jewelry. Above the mantel, expressive paintings from Laura Rathe and chain sculpture from Beth Kahmi bring another layer of art and movement to the room.

Beyond the lounge, the mood shifts to something more intimate. A vanity table and chair paired with an oval brass-framed mirror by Allan Knight create a glamorous setting for the rituals of getting ready. Behind folds of richly draped fabric lies her private dressing area, secluded and slightly mysterious. A gown by Kate McGuire of Converted Closet takes on a sculptural presence, reading somewhere between fashion and art.

Moody, glamorous and seductive, La Vie Privée celebrates the moments surrounding the ritual of getting dressed—the pause before the party, the last look in the mirror, the dress worn simply because it makes her happy.
